ALLAN TYLER'S
1962 GT HAWK
My first sighting of a Studebaker Hawk would have been when I was about 12 years old. (Mid sixties)
I had probably seen them earlier but taken no interest.
I remember it quite clearly, standing out the front of a friend’s house in Mount Waverley
whose neighbour was a valiant nut. He had just bought a VC V8 regal which we were all drooling over.
Then a car cruised down the road and slowed as it passed. We all turned fixated on this car.
After it was out of sight I looked at the Valiant owner and asked what the HELL was that.
He responded in a manner that gave me the distinct impression that he no longer admired his new purchase.
“THAT” WAS A GT HAWK he said, as he turned his attention back to the Valiant.
So time passed by and I grew a little older, bought cars, got married, sold cars,
had children, bought different cars, etc, etc.
Then about 3 years ago that memory was somehow catapulted back into my consciousness
and would not go away. I had to have one of those. This affliction is not restricted to cars, l
like the Marantz 2252 Receiver I used to drool over in the HI FI shops in 1971.
I now own one of those and a couple of others. But the 2600 receiver along with the finned Hawk still haunt me.
Yes I still live in the past and probably always will
The Hawk the day of purchase
The 62 Hawk was purchased about 2 years ago.
It had been subject to a heap of money being thrown at it by the previous owner. (A lot more than I paid for it).
Over the time another bucket load of receipts has been added to the growing pile.
The engine bay as purchased
The car was not a frame off restoration. It has had body work, re spray, suspension,
motor and transmission rebuilds and upholstery by the previous owner.
I have up graded the brakes, refurbished the bumpers and some trim.
Added the wheels, cleaned rust proofed and painted the chassis and underside.
Added the heater, air conditioning (almost complete).
Some added stopping additions
Some creature comforts
